Y Seraiki parents talk 2 their children in Urdu ? 2007/11/28 07:03 Karma: 0
Why Seraiki parents talk to their children in Urdu instead of Seraiki? And I also observe that even Seraiki student talk Urdu with each other in big cities like Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi.

Hello friends

i guess this is an obvious fallout of the National language Policy of Pakistan which tried to impose a language that was actually spoken in the heartland of India, and make it a case of identifying the Muslims of Pakistan. Very misleading policy, indeed. I think the Urdu language is the result of the national identity of Pakistan as a separate nation for the Muslims of the Indian subcontinent. This was where the leadership of Pakistan made a mistake. They on the one hand brought in the language of India on to the territories that had distinct regional tongues, just like the indian states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu etc. and yet they tried to create the belief that Urdu would separate the Pakistanis from the Indians. This false propoganda was only an attempt to divide people so that the rulers could rule. Urdu is a language of India, very close to Hindi or Hindustani. The tragedy is, that with partition, the linguistic minority Hindus of Balochistan, Sindh Punjab and "Seraikistan" who came to Mainland India, now speak another variation of Urdu, which is Hindi, as that is the language spoken there.
On both sides of the border, the vernaculars have met their end, whereas other vernaculars in the South, west and east of India are being promoted. We, teh Baluch, Sindhi, Seraikii and Punjabi people have lost our motherlands as well as our ethnic and linguistic identities to the idea of Pakistan as a divisive force based on religion. We should have really co-existed in our regions, like brothers, hindu or muslim, and not had religious fundamentalists divide us.
But alas, that is history.

Regards

Vikram

With all due regard to my brothers in Pakistan, i wish to clarify, that i am not against the people of Pakistan, but against the concept of pakistan as a theocratic Islamic state. If Pakistan was a secular country, that recognized and respected our linguistic and religious freedom and identity, i would myself proudly call myself a Pakistani. Today i only dare call myself either INDIAN or SERAIKI. Not Pakistani. My love for Pakistan (the land, not the concept) the people, the language and the very very honorable sufi tradition (which is SECULAR AND MULTI RELIGIOUS IN THE TRUE SENSE OF THE WORD) is ever so great.

We must not forget, that the region now encompassed within Pakistan, is the area where major religions of the world have coexisted for centuries, unlike many other regions of the world. I tell you, my Pakistani brothers, you are fortunate that you have such a rich tradition of religious tolerance and coexistence which is in many ways only a contrived concept in India. But Alas, the country is founded on a divisive concept of Islamism. That is by far the biggest tragedy and greatest injustice that has been meted out to you all.

You all have the right to love your hindu and christian and Parsee brothers because they be Sindhi or Baloch or Seraiki or Punjabi, and not have to hate them because the state machinery, the military and the mullahs so desire you to do.

My love and support to all of you in these times of trouble. God will be with us all, one day, and one day we will be able to unite.

Love,

vikram
