A Great Concern 2008/06/29 00:39 Karma: 0
Fist of all let me introduce here on the forum as i am new here. My name is Abdulahad and im a university student. Its great to see a little seraiki community on the net where we can share our concern and can talk about different issues.

The thing that i want to start this discussion is about our people and our language. I live in Canada and know about half a dozen seriaki families. None of the families speak Seraiki with their children. I personally think this of a great concern as people who are well off or are a bit educated tend to ignore their own lovely language and adopt the language which is not pakistani and has nothing to do with pakistan, urdu that is. I always question this to myself and have never reached any reasonable conclusion. What are your opinion on this issue? Have you also noticed similar thing, do some of you also speak Urdu with you kids? If so why?

Dear Abdullah ,

This horrible trend of not transmitting language of their fore fathers to their next generations is quite common among the Seraikis . It is now a very common observation and we certainly can see this happening in our own families. I dont know what will be the effect of this trend in days to come but I am sure it will create a crisis of identity for the Seraikis who receive Urdu as their first language from their parents.

According to Dr. Tariq Rehman (expert is language and linguistics ) only those languages will survive which can ensure economic well being of its speakers. Where as the languages which doesnot possess this charateristic will vanish gradually . Unfortunately this is true for Seraiki .

Due to lack of independence Seraikis can not do much for their language . Where we have academies for progression of all major languages in Pakistan we dont have one for the most widely spoken language of the country.

However , I am still hopefull about Seraiki language , Seraiki language through out history never was a language of court or offices , It never was a language of Rulers or Invaders who would occupy Seraiki lasnds and instal their governments . But still the language some how has managed to survive and still is the biggest language of the country.

For those who dont like to give Seraiki to their childern as their mother tongue I would say they are living with an inferiority complex and by not giving this language to their children they are insulting their elders who gave them this language. At this stage I recall few lines from one of writing of Jagdesh Chand Batra " Sindh wadi day wasday rasday keenway apnay wasaib koon choor tay Delhi, Karnal , Rohtak , Hisar , Sonipat tay Farid Abad chalay gay , O , saray apni MaBoli Bhul gay tay ieen duniya ich Rull gay."
